ADAM HAYWARD BEHIND THE LENS.
“My life is a constant movement”, said Adam Hayward. He spent more time traveling around the world than in your own State: California. In the USA, Adam is one the most famous Photographer and Moviemaker of Skimboard.
In the interview below for Auskim, Adam tell us about Skimboard as a life style, Spot’s all over the world, Contest’s, Companies, future of skimboard and BRASIL.
Read a different point of view of skimboard’s world.
AUSKIM * Tell us about your life?
ADAM HAYWARD * My life is constant movement. I haven’t really lived in the same place for more than six months since i was 17 so I am constantly changing with my environment and the things I see. I pretty much thrive on seeing things, things that I find visually stimulating are like food, which is nice because I don’t have any money and so I get really hungry.
AUSKIM * When you discovered the skimboard?
ADAM HAYWARD * The first time I really saw wave skimming was in Hawaii when I was like 15 i think, but I didn’t really start until I was 17.
AUSKIM * Which were your first impressions/feelings about this sport?
ADAM HAYWARD * It was different, and i love different. Also, it involved shore break, and i love shore break so it was initially a good combo for me. When I first saw it in Laguna however, I wanted to show everyone, and i have been trying to do that ever since.
AUSKIM * When you arrived in Brazil?
ADAM HAYWARD * I didn’t know what to expect here, but it has been way more than i could have imagined. A truly amazing country, especially the Ubatuba area.
AUSKIM * How long you’ll stay here?
ADAM HAYWARD * 2 months, but I want to come back.
AUSKIM * Which places you visited before Sununga? Wich places you’ll visit before finish this project?
ADAM HAYWARD * For skimboarding, I have been to Mexico, Holland, France, Spain, Portugal and Chile. I plan on going to a couple more countries before I finish, but they are a secret ![]()
AUSKIM * What do you think about the Brazilians and the skimboard that we are developing here?
ADAM HAYWARD * The Brazilian people are incredible. Very hospitable and kind. The sport is doing very well here with the help of organizations like AUSKIM, a country really needs to be united under one organization and all get along well with each other. The sport is fart to small to be fighting with each other about small things; everyone needs to help out to make each contest and each location fun for everyone who attends.
AUSKIM * You are traveling around the world, how can you describe the skimboard in North America, Europe and South America?
ADAM HAYWARD * The sport is still really small and relatively un organized in all of those places. However each is slowly growing and organizing and that is great to see. But behind the contests and organizations, each place has amazing people who love to have fun at the beach and welcome each other with open arms. It really is like a huge, worldwide family and I feel at home wherever I go.
AUSKIM * Can you talk about UST, ESL (EUROPEAN SKIM LEAGUE) and AUSKIM?
ADAM HAYWARD * The UST is really doing great now, the contests are well organized and they have very good media coverage witch is absolutely crucial for finding and keeping sponsors. I don’t know too much about ESL, but I think they just added one or two stops in Portugal, which is just a great step for the sport worldwide. While AUSKIM is relatively small in comparison to the others, it has the same basis: a few guys who not only love participating in the sport, but would love to see it grow and be something positive for their country and its people. Beyond that they are in the beginning stages which are inevitably the hardest, yet they are still trying, being organized and actually rounding up sponsors and putting on contests. The whole country really needs to unify and back this idea if they want the sport to grow locally.
AUSKIM * How do you see an international corporation between these teams plus sponsors working together to develop the Dream Tour?
ADAM HAYWARD * Well, that is a great idea that has been tossed around a lot, but is unfortunately a little far off at the moment. That being said, it is a great idea that should not be shot down but should definitely be talked about and begin to be developed. It will take everyone’s unity, support and extra time to accomplish something like that.
AUSKIM * How should be the Dream Tour seeing it as movie maker?
ADAM HAYWARD * The locations will have to be decided upon, the number of contestants, and the dates will have to be well thought out to be optimal. Then, each rider and each location should have photos and video on the website dedicated to the event. The entire thing would have to be professional and fully thought out and then pitched to sponsors big and small because obviously the main hindrance is money.
AUSKIM * What should be the spots and how many contest?
ADAM HAYWARD * Cap Ferret-France West St-United States Lovers Beach-Mexico Praia Sununga-Brazil
and possibly one in Australia. I’m not certain of a consistent sider spot there, however they do have some that should be considered. The contest should be focused around sider spots or really long, good liners. If this is going to be the apex of skimboarding, it has to be held at the biggest, best known waves at the time they are most consistent. It would certainly be a difficult thing to do and would definitely require a waiting period of some sort.
AUSKIM * Talking about contest, 25 july happened the SKIM FESTIVAL BRASIL 2009 the 2/4 Macumba Beach Rio de Janeiro.
What do you though about the job of AUSKIM on it?
AUSKIM * We can affirm that Skimmers are searching for the SIDEWAVES. Can you describe the SIDE WAVE?
ADAM HAYWARD * The side wave is the ultimate thing in skimboarding. Learning to ride one properly is definitely one of the most difficult tasks in the world, making the reward that much sweeter. The feeling of being pushed away from a rock on a small piece of fiber and foam towards a bigger oncoming wave, and then transferring from one energy source to another with this small, flat board, has such a rare feeling that it really is indescribable and you will never know it by any other way than by doing it yourself. And once you do, you will be a slave to that feeling.
